What to Expect From A Claim Representative
You can start the claim process with as little or as much information as you have at hand. But what's most important is to take that first step. Don't delay. Even having the basics will help, including:

  • When and what was damaged or lost

  • Extent of damages

  • If you feel your home is not safe to live in

  • Related injuries

  • If temporary repairs are needed

  • Whether authorities such as police, fire department, or ambulance were notified

A claim representative will work with you to identify other information needed during the claim process.

The steps in handling your claim can vary depending on the type of loss. For example, a claim involving only minor damage may be handled with a single phone call, while others involving more extensive damage will probably require more steps. Here, a claim representative will help you through the process by arranging the inspection of your damaged home or property.

What to do following a claim:

Safety First
First and foremost, if your home is damaged and you fear the structure has been weakened, do not try to enter. Some other important considerations are:

  • Keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging due to retained water.

  • If electricity is still on, do not enter rooms where standing water is present.

  • Do not use any electrical equipment/appliances while standing on wet carpet or floors, particularly if the floor is concrete.

  • Watch for broken power lines, shattered glass, splintered wood or other sharp objects.

Tips and Trip Ups : Make Sure You Have the Right Information
There are some immediate steps you can take to get your claim on the right track, even before a claim representative visits.

  • If possible, prevent further damage by making temporary repairs.

  • Don't let anyone talk you into making expensive, permanent repairs prior to a claim representative's inspection.

  • Report missing or stolen property immediately.

  • Don't throw out any damaged property before a claim representative inspects it.

  • Make a list of all missing or damaged items.

  • Take photographs of damages.

  • Look for structural damage such as cracks in walls or damage to floors or ceilings and share these findings with the claim representative.

Taking Steps to Prevent Further Damage
Providing your safety isn't at risk, it's important you take steps to prevent further damage to your home, such as making temporary repairs, keep all of your receipts for the adjuster (keep copies for yourself).
